Mixing Colours for a Landscape
*This class is suitable for all skill levels*
For this class we will begin by premixing colours on our palette, spending focused time on colour & value before the brush touches the canvas. Then, in a fun speed-painting exercise inspired by plein air techniques, we’ll work quickly and confidently, layering those prepared colours to capture light and atmosphere with energy and freshness.
Aisling will walk you through the painting step-by-step over zoom. For your convenience, you will receive a Zoom link about 30 minutes before every class in a session. Our virtual classes are hosted using a professional film set up for a high definition virtual class. The class takes place between 6:30:00pm-9:00pm Eastern Time (Toronto). The first 10 minutes are for questions about set up and some quick introductions to the process. Be ready with your brush in hand at 6:40 :)
You will receive a zoom link. Please email me if you have any issues:

A Street Scene Series
Stari Grad Alley
Dermot Mckeown
In this class we will continue our street scene series by painting a quiet lane in Stari Grad with a lone man and his bicycle. We will begin by blocking in the darks first to establish strong structure and depth, then layer the lights to build atmosphere and subtle storytelling. We will compare the reference photo to the finished painting to understand what was simplified, shifted or emphasized. This session reinforces what we have been practicing: clear value shapes, confident edges and letting light guide the viewer through the scene.
Aisling will walk you through the painting step-by-step over zoom. For your convenience, you will receive a Zoom link about 30 minutes before every class in a session. Rattray Marsh in Autumn
*This class is suitable for all skill levels*
Let's get loosened up!!
In this class we will paint a colourful fall scene with a focus on staying loose. Learn how to suggest trees, leaves and light with confident brushwork and simplified shapes. We will explore how to capture the feeling of the season rather than every detail, building atmosphere and movement into your painting.
Aisling will walk you through the painting step-by-step over zoom. For your convenience, you will receive a Zoom link about 30 minutes before every class in a session. Man Wearing Laurels
John Singer Sargent c. 1874-1880
*Please be advised I will be demonstrating with oils for part 1 and part 2 - using Gamsol for part 1 and Liquin for part 2*
Man Wearing Laurels is an early oil study by John Singer Sargent from around 1874–1880, painted while he trained in Paris under Carolus-Duran. It shows a male model in a simple pose, focusing on light, structure and form. Sargent builds the figure through tonal values, using a dark background for depth and soft transitions to model the flesh. Edges are sharper on the face and softer on the shoulders, showing his early skill in guiding the viewer’s eye. The painting is in LACMA and offers a glimpse of Sargent before he became a famous society portraitist.

A Street Scene Series
Stari Grad Nocturne
Dermot Mckeown
In this class we continue our street scene series with a lively urban scene full of groups of people. The focus is on integrating figures naturally into the landscape, using composition, scale and overlapping to create depth and movement. We’ll start with the darks to establish structure, then layer the lights to bring atmosphere and life to the scene. Students will also compare the reference photo to the painting to see how choices in simplification, edges and light help unify people and environment.

A Street Scene Series
Split Market
Dermot Mckeown
Inspired by the lively streets of Split, Croatia, this project is all about building an engaging scene full of movement and atmosphere. Over three classes, we’ll take a slow, methodical approach to designing a dynamic streetscape — deciding what deserves attention and what can be left as a loose suggestion. Not everything needs to be fully rendered; hinting at shapes and figures can create even more energy and interest. With plenty of time to develop the painting, we’ll explore how selective detail and abstraction work together to bring a busy street to life.
