A Still Life Series

A Gold Clock

Dermot Mckeown

Still Life is the Artist's Laboratory

Continuing from our silver teapot study, we’ll now explore a gold clock. While silver is all about value and reflections, gold adds warmth and subtle colour shifts, giving us a new challenge to translate light and surroundings into believable tones.

We’ll focus on seeing reflections, simplifying complex surfaces, and painting highlights with confidence—building on the skills we practiced with silver while discovering how the same principles work on a warmer, more luminous metal.

Aisling will walk you through the painting step-by-step over zoom. For your convenience, you will receive a Zoom link about 30 minutes before every class in a session. Our virtual classes are hosted using a professional film set up for a high definition virtual class. The class takes place between 7:00pm-9:30pm Eastern Time (Toronto). The first 10 minutes are for questions about set up and some quick introductions to the process. Be ready with your brush in hand at 7:10 :)

You will receive a zoom link. Please email me if you have any issues:

In the Wild North, c. 1891

Ivan Shishkin

In this one-part class, we will study Shishkin’s In the Wild North and explore how he brings the Russian forest to life. We will focus on capturing the structure of trees, the play of light and shadow, and the textures of foliage, bark, and forest floor, while simplifying the scene into clear and striking forms and shapes.

This session is all about careful observation, depth, and confident brushwork. You will practice suggesting the richness and atmosphere of the forest while building a stronger understanding of landscape painting techniques. Phthalo Blue plays a major role in this painting!

Mrs. Frank Millet

John Singer Sargent

This Winter Schedule we will come back to our Portrait Mondays! Regular portrait practice is one of the most effective ways to improve drawing and painting skills. This class focuses on consistent portrait studies through drawing, painting, and master studies, building understanding over time through repetition and close observation.

A Sargent Head Study! We will revisit our favourite paintings to see how our approach changes as we deepen our portrait practice. This study we will work on simplifying the value shifts and move into getting our skin tones just right in Part 2. We can use a smaller canvas for this head study - approximately 10x10 or 12x12.

Aisling will walk you through the painting step-by-step over zoom. For your convenience, you will receive a Zoom link about 30 minutes before every class in a session. Our virtual classes are hosted using a professional film set up for a high definition virtual class. The class takes place between 6:30:00pm-9:00pm Eastern Time (Toronto). The first 10 minutes are for questions about set up and some quick introductions to the process. Be ready with your brush in hand at 6:40 :)

A Still Life Series

Clayware and Tomatoes

Dermot Mckeown

Still Life is the Artist's Laboratory

In this class, we’ll work from a painting by my father of a clayware urn and tomatoes set on white drapery. The addition of fabric shifts the focus away from tabletop reflections and toward folds, value changes, and soft transitions.

We’ll concentrate on simplifying form, controlling value, and using edges to create clarity and depth, with the white fabric offering a great opportunity to loosen up, explore subtle value shifts, and enjoy the process of painting drapery with confidence.

Aisling will walk you through the painting step-by-step over zoom. For your convenience, you will receive a Zoom link about 30 minutes before every class in a session. Our virtual classes are hosted using a professional film set up for a high definition virtual class. Trees and Snow, c. 1924

Lawren Harris

In this class, we’ll work from Lawren Harris’s Trees and Snow, using it as a master study in simplification and structure. Harris pares the landscape down to strong, quiet shapes, making this a great painting for studying value, edges, and subtle shifts in light and temperature.

We’ll focus on how snow is built through value rather than white, how trees act as solid, architectural forms, and how doing less can often say more. The emphasis will be on careful looking, a limited palette, and painting with clarity instead of detail.

Aisling will walk you through the painting step-by-step over zoom. For your convenience, you will receive a Zoom link about 30 minutes before every class in a session. Our virtual classes are hosted using a professional film set up for a high definition virtual class. Mixing Skintones

This Winter Schedule we will come back to our Portrait Mondays! Regular portrait practice is one of the most effective ways to improve drawing and painting skills. This class focuses on consistent portrait studies through drawing, painting, and master studies, building understanding over time through repetition and close observation.

A Head Study! Let's learn how to mix darker skin tones. I wish we had a Sargent head study to practice from but this head study is inspired by his painting - "Head of a Capri Girl". This study we will work on simplifying the anatomy of the head, really engaging with the drawing and move into getting our skin tones just right in Part 2.

Aisling will walk you through the painting step-by-step over zoom. A Moroccan Street Scene

John Singer Sargent

In this class, we’ll paint from a Moroccan street scene by John Singer Sargent, focusing on light, atmosphere, and a strong sense of place.

Sargent was less interested in detail than in capturing the effects of sunlight and shadow. In his Moroccan street scenes, simplified shapes and bold value contrasts allowed him to work quickly, using confident brushwork to suggest life and movement.

We’ll focus on seeing the big shapes, simplifying complex scenes, and painting with clarity and freshness.

Aisling will walk you through the painting step-by-step over zoom. For your convenience, you will receive a Zoom link about 30 minutes before every class in a session. Our virtual classes are hosted using a professional film set up for a high definition virtual class. Paint Metallic Objects

Still Life is the Artist's Laboratory

What makes it look shiny! This is what we are going to focus on for this class. We’ll focus on observing subtle changes in value, reflections, and color temperature, learning to simplify complex surfaces while maintaining the shine and solidity of the metal. This is a chance to practice edge control, highlight placement, and brushwork that makes metal feel real—without overworking it.

Aisling will walk you through the painting step-by-step over zoom.
