Festival of Colour

Dermot Mckeown

*This virtual class is designed for beginners to intermediate painters. I will be using acrylics for the first session and oils in the second session. Any medium is welcome*

A festival is a great place to capture the drama of colour and light and....people! Lots of them. The overlapping array of people makes for a dizzying sight to behold. There is something sensory driven about the buzz of a crowd and the energy comes through the canvas. â€‹

Aisling will walk you through the painting step-by-step over zoom. For your convenience, you will receive a Zoom link about 30 minutes before every class in a session. Our virtual classes are hosted using a professional film set up for a high definition virtual class. The class takes place between 7:00pm-9:30pm Eastern Time (Toronto). The first 10 minutes are for questions about set up and some quick introductions to the process. Be ready with your brush in hand at 7:10 :)

You will receive a zoom link. Please email me if you have any issues:

Sybil Sassoon

John Singer Sargent 1913

*This virtual class is designed for intermediate to advanced. I will doing an acrylic underpainting for part 1 and switching to oils for part 2*

In this class, we will be painting a portrait of Sybil Sassoon, after John Singer Sargent's remarkable 1913 painting, The Countess of Rocksavage (Sybil Sassoon). Previously, we focused on drawing Sybil, and now we will explore the challenge of capturing her likeness in paint.

Sargent created both a drawing and a final painting of Sybil, and it's fascinating to compare the two. His studies often reveal the artistic decisions he made — what he chose to emphasize, adjust, or refine in his final work. Observing these changes offers valuable insights into his creative process.

Sargent and Sybil were friends, and this painting was a gift to her — a testament to their bond. Given Sybil's remarkable life and accomplishments, it's easy to see why she inspired such admiration.

As we paint, we'll take time to study Sargent's brushwork, his use of light, and his ability to convey character. This will be a wonderful opportunity to appreciate both his technical mastery and the story behind the portrait.

Andre Benjamin-Constant,

Portrait of the Artist's Son

Jean Joseph Benjamin Constant

*This virtual class is designed for intermediate to advanced students, but anyone is free to try it out!

In this class, we will be drawing a portrait by Jean-Joseph Benjamin-Constant. Thanks Mariya for the suggestion! Benjamin-Constant studied at the École Des Beaux-Arts and was known for his striking Orientalist paintings. He also traveled extensively to Canada and the United States, where his work was well-received. We will be taking a journey into the Orientalist movement, examining how artists like Benjamin-Constant and a familiar name you might recognize; Eugène Delacroix.

Below is a list of recommended materials but you do NOT need anything fancy- any mark-making tool will do. A pencil from 8th grade, even a pen. Throw a stick in a fire! :) I will be using a soft charcoal, like Willow or Vine Charcoal and a kneadable eraser.

Suggested Supplies:

This class does not include a kit. A recommended list is below but you can use any materials you already have! You need paper, a drawing tool and an eraser. Keeping it simple.

  • Paper - Any paper will work for this exercise but you can use anything from basic newsprint to thicker paper like: Amazon Link

  • Charcoal like Vine or Willow Charcoal. Or a pencil- preferably something soft than you can do some shading with. I will be using Willow charcoal: Amazon Link

  • An Eraser - a kneadable eraser is my favourite! Amazon Link

I always wear black when I draw - especially with Charcoal! :) It gets everywhere but it is easy to clean and does not stain.
