Dramatic Sky Study
Aisling Mckeown
*This virtual class is designed for beginners to intermediate painters. You are welcome to use oils or acrylics*
Another Dramatic Sky Study! I love these fun and energetic paintings to loosen up and indulge in brilliant colours. We will use a palette knife for a dramatic and "active" effect. When we refer to the "action" in a painting there is usually an emphasis on the mark-making. Sometimes this involves using thicker paint applications and allowing the paint to stand out- opposed to working it in the canvas. One sure way to get action in a painting is to use a palette knife. This allows for expressive and gestural marks.
Aisling will walk you through the painting step-by-step over zoom. For your convenience, you will receive a Zoom link about 30 minutes before every class in a session. Our virtual classes are hosted using a professional film set up for a high definition virtual class. The class takes place between 7:00pm-9:30pm Eastern Time (Toronto). The first 10 minutes are for questions about set up and some quick introductions to the process. Be ready with your brush in hand at 7:10 :)
You will receive a zoom link. Please email me if you have any issues:

John Singer Sargent
Study of Male nude, for "Apollo
and the Muses" c. 1916-1921
*This virtual class is designed for intermediate to advanced students, but anyone is free to try it out!*
A figure study! A fabulous way to practice gesture and form.
Drawing the human figure isn't just about capturing anatomy—it’s about seeing. When you practice figure drawing, you’re training your eye to understand proportion, balance, rhythm, and gesture. You’re learning to see how things relate, not just what they are. That skill translates to everything: landscapes, still lifes, abstract compositions—because figure drawing teaches you the language of form in space.
Below is a list of recommended materials but you do NOT need anything fancy- any mark-making tool will do. A pencil from 8th grade, even a pen. Throw a stick in a fire! :) I will be using soft vine charcoal for this exercise.

AI vs Hopper challenge
*This virtual class is designed for all skill levels! I will be using acrylics to demonstrate but you are welcome to use any medium.*
As artists grapple with the rise of AI-generated images, one of the most pressing questions is whether something created without human feeling or intention can truly be considered art. While AI can produce stunningly realistic images by mimicking existing styles, it lacks the emotional presence and decision-making that define human creativity. This has led many to value the artistic process more deeply than ever before, especially the tactile, intentional nature of painting. Rather than rejecting AI outright, some artists are beginning to reinterpret AI-generated images as source material—a modern equivalent of the camera obscura or the mannequin—using them as a springboard for personal expression. In repainting an AI-generated image in the style of Hopper, for instance, we reintroduce the human hand, giving the image a heartbeat and reclaiming it as something felt, not just synthesized.

Drawing with Charcoal

Charcoal Study - In a Garden, Corfu
John Singer Sargent c. 1909
*This virtual class is designed for intermediate to advanced students, but anyone is free to try it out!
Let's practice for our upcoming portrait session coming up on Thursday May 15 & 22! Painters often do charcoal studies of their subjects to iron out any potential wrinkles in their approach. Practice makes perfect! You can try out this charcoal study regardless if you are planning to follow with the painting exercise. Let's get comfortable with the positioning and form of the hands and the unique tilt and angle of our subjects head.
Below is a list of recommended materials but you do NOT need anything fancy- any mark-making tool will do. A pencil from 8th grade, even a pen. Throw a stick in a fire! :) I will be using a soft charcoal, like Willow or Vine Charcoal and a kneadable eraser.

I always wear black when I draw - especially with Charcoal! :) It gets everywhere but it is easy to clean and does not stain.

An Old Man in Military Costume
Rembrandt c. 1630
*This virtual class is designed for intermediate to advanced painters but anyone is welcome to join!*
Rembrandt’s Old Man in Military Costume isn’t a portrait of a specific person but a “tronie”—a character study that explores costume, mood, and expression. The richly dressed figure appears noble at first glance, but his downcast eyes and thoughtful expression suggest reflection rather than triumph. Rembrandt’s use of chiaroscuro (dramatic light and shadow) brings the face and costume to life, contrasting the shine of armour with the vulnerability of age. Instead of glorifying military power, the painting invites us to consider the inner life of the man beneath the uniform. It’s a striking example of how Rembrandt infused even imagined subjects with psychological depth, transforming studies of light and fabric into intimate reflections on humanity.

In a Garden, Corfu
John Singer Sargent c. 1909
*This virtual class is designed for intermediate to advanced painters but anyone is welcome to join! I will be using oils to demonstrate.*
In the fall of 1909, Sargent spent six weeks on the island of Corfu, accompanied by his sister Emily, her friend Eliza Wedgwood, and Wilfrid and Jane de Glehn. It is Jane (1873–1961), gracefully posed in a white blouse, pale blue skirt, and a soft cashmere shawl, who commands the composition. Her sweeping skirt, rendered in layered hues of blue, green, mauve, and whispering pink, anchors the foreground and becomes a study in light and texture. The garment, brought by Sargent for such occasions, offered him a perfect vehicle for exploring the nuances of fabric. In this interpretation, we have chosen to omit the two peripheral figures, allowing the scene to revolve entirely around Jane and the quiet drama of light and form she embodies.
