Colour Theory and Still Life

Study of a Lemon and Eggplant

Exploring Yellow and Purple as complements

Still Life is the Artist's Laboratory

In this class, we will paint a still life featuring a bright yellow lemon paired with a muted purple eggplant. Yellow and violet sit opposite each other on the colour wheel, making them complementary colours.

The lemon will be handled in a higher saturation so it becomes the focal point of the composition. The eggplant, while still clearly violet, will be moderated and softened so it supports rather than competes.

Let's explore:

  • How complementary colours intensify each other

  • How to mute a colour without losing its identity

  • How to control saturation to create hierarchy

  • How contrast can be bold yet balanced

This session focuses on allowing one colour to lead while the other enhances it.

Aisling will walk you through the painting step-by-step over zoom. For your convenience, you will receive a Zoom link about 30 minutes before every class in a session. Our virtual classes are hosted using a professional film set up for a high definition virtual class. The class takes place between 7:00pm-9:30pm Eastern Time (Toronto). The first 10 minutes are for questions about set up and some quick introductions to the process. Be ready with your brush in hand at 7:10 :)

You will receive a zoom link. Please email me if you have any issues:

A Study After Van Gogh

Vase with Red Gladioli c. 1886

In this workshop we will paint a still life inspired by Vase with Red Gladioli by Vincent van Gogh. Using the painting as a reference, we will explore Van Gogh’s bold use of colour, expressive brushwork, and lively compositions. Students will focus on observing colour relationships, building the structure of the still life, and experimenting with energetic mark-making. The goal is not to copy the painting exactly, but to study the visual ideas behind it and develop our own interpretation.

All levels are welcome.

A Study After Dermot Mckeown

The Point - Winter Landscape

In this workshop we will practice the art of painting expressively! Let's get fast and loose with our brushes/knives. Expressive mark making comes from trusting your gut and not second guessing our work in progess. Sometimes we get caught up on something small in a painting that keeps us from seeing the big picture. Painting fast forces us to keep the ball rolling and being comfortable "fixing" things later. We all have a little perfectionism and this can frustrate us when things don't line up exactly with our vision. We will always and forever be learning to trust the process!

All levels are welcome.

Colour Theory and Still Life

Study of an Apple and Green Jug

Exploring Red and Green as complements

Still Life is the Artist's Laboratory

This class centres on the classic complementary pairing of red and green. We will paint a red apple as the dominant feature, supported by a green jug handled in a quieter, more muted way.

Red and green create strong visual contrast when placed side by side. By softening the green, the red apple becomes more vibrant and visually forward.

In this class, students will explore:

  • How complementary colours create visual energy

  • How to reduce chroma intentionally

  • How to prevent two strong colours from competing

  • How to create harmony through controlled contrast

The goal is not brightness everywhere — but intentional emphasis.

Aisling will walk you through the painting step-by-step over zoom. For your convenience, you will receive a Zoom link about 30 minutes before every class in a session. Our virtual classes are hosted using a professional film set up for a high definition virtual class. Colour Theory and Still Life

Study of an Orange and Blue Jug

Exploring Orange and Blue as complements

In our third session, we will paint a bright orange paired with a blue jug. Blue and orange are one of the most widely used complementary combinations in painting. The orange will be handled with clarity and saturation, while the blue jug will be softened and slightly neutralized. This relationship allows the orange to stand out without overwhelming the composition. Students will focus on:

  • Managing intensity between complements

  • Using contrast to create depth

  • Allowing muted colour to strengthen a saturated focal point

  • Creating cohesion through complementary balance

By the end of the series, students will have three paintings and a practical understanding of how complementary colour relationships can be used intentionally to create impact, hierarchy, and harmony.

Aisling will walk you through the painting step-by-step over zoom. For your convenience, you will receive a Zoom link about 30 minutes before every class in a session. Our virtual classes are hosted using a professional film set up for a high definition virtual class.
