Evening Stroll
After Hsin-Yao Tseng
Dermot Mckeown

In this class, we’ll paint a study after Hsin-Yao Tseng’s Evening Stroll, focusing on creating mood through strong value relationships. The goal is to use light and dark to build atmosphere and guide the viewer’s eye, rather than relying on detail.
As a small follow-up to our still life series, we’ll also revisit complementary colour—a quick reminder to think about how these pairings can support the overall harmony of the painting! Which complements are at playing the strongest role here?

Aisling will walk you through the painting step-by-step over zoom. For your convenience, you will receive a Zoom link about 30 minutes before every class in a session. Our virtual classes are hosted using a professional film set up for a high definition virtual class. The class takes place between 7:00pm-9:30pm Eastern Time (Toronto). The first 10 minutes are for questions about set up and some quick introductions to the process. Be ready with your brush in hand at 7:10 :)
You will receive a zoom link. Please email me if you have any issues:

Race Horses
Dermot Mckeown

This class focuses on suggestion over precision—capturing the energy of racehorses without rendering every detail. Rather than carefully describing each leg or form, we’ll explore how loose marks, rhythm, and gesture can convey motion and intensity. Up close, the horses may appear distorted or even a little strange, but when viewed as a whole, the chaos resolves into a convincing, dynamic scene. It’s an exercise in trusting the eye, embracing imperfection, and letting the painting come together through movement rather than control.

Jaoquin Sorolla
Three Sails c. 1903

In Three Sails (1903), Sorolla captures a fleeting moment on a sunlit beach in Valencia, where three women and a child walk along the shore beneath bright white sails. The painting is a masterclass in light and value, using a high-key palette to explore subtle shifts within whites and reflections. In this session, we’ll focus on simplifying forms, observing warm and cool variations in light, and using loose, confident brushwork to suggest movement and atmosphere rather than detail.

All levels are welcome.

Dermot McKeown
Marina Agana

In this class, we’ll paint a vibrant marina scene, focusing on simplifying complex detail into strong shapes and bold colour. In the first part, we’ll concentrate on drawing and laying down flat blocks of colour to establish the composition, values, and overall structure of the scene. In the second part, we’ll switch to using a palette knife to build texture and energy, creating expressive marks for the boats, masts, and reflections while enhancing the contrast between the cool water and warm, glowing lights. The emphasis throughout will be on simplifying, working confidently, and capturing the movement and light of the scene rather than getting caught up in detail. If you don't have or use a palette knife - you can also use an old credit card or a piece of any hard, flexible card-like material.
