Summertime in Yorkville
Dermot Mckeown
*I will be demonstrating in acrylics for part 1 and oils for part 2. Some experience recommended but any skill level is welcome to join!*
Another fabulous painting by Dermot Mckeown! This is a crop of his large scale version. You can check out that version here: Summer in Yorkville
We will be unpacking the development from photograph to painting and the various ways you can manipulate your reference to make your paintings more interesting. Is there a figure taking away from an element of your composition? You can omit them! Or add someone to an area of interest. An artist has to choose what to emphasize, minimize or omit completely from their references. A lot of the creativity of painting happens long before the brush touches the canvas!
Aisling will walk you through the painting step-by-step over zoom. For your convenience, you will receive a Zoom link about 30 minutes before every class in a session. Our virtual classes are hosted using a professional film set up for a high definition virtual class. The class takes place between 7:00pm-9:30pm Eastern Time (Toronto). The first 10 minutes are for questions about set up and some quick introductions to the process. Be ready with your brush in hand at 7:10 :)
You will receive a zoom link. Please email me if you have any issues:

Colour Theory Workshop
*This class is suitable for all skill levels*
Every so often (at least once a year) it is a good idea to paint a full colour wheel—a great exercise to refresh your understanding of colour theory and palette hygiene. We’ll explore pigment biases, how colours interact, and why arranging your palette in the order of the colour wheel makes mixing easier and more intuitive. This will be an open, interactive session with demonstrations and plenty of time for questions. Bring your own palettes and feel free to experiment with colours beyond your usual kit as we practice creating vibrant, harmonious colour mixtures.

A Bar at the Folies-Bergère
Édouard Manet
*This virtual class is designed for intermediate to advanced painters.
Please note -this is a 3 part class with a week break between class 2 & 3. If you can't make a session you will have time to catch up from the recording. Part 1 I will be using acrylics and then switching to oils for part 2 & 3*
Édouard Manet’s A Bar at the Folies-Bergère (1882) is a stunning snapshot of Parisian nightlife, full of energy and subtle drama. As a realist, Manet didn’t shy away from showing the barmaid’s quiet sadness and the tricky realities of modern life. Her thoughtful, slightly weary expression, combined with the puzzling mirror reflection where she seems to interact with a customer who isn’t really there, pulls viewers into the scene. My favorite little detail is the legs of a performer in the upper left corner—they add a dash of humor and remind us that life at the Folies-Bergère was lively, chaotic, and full of surprises. With its mix of realism, clever perspective, and subtle allegory, the painting turns a simple night at the bar into a fascinating look at the human experience.

Portrait of Fräulein Lieser
Gustav Klimt c. 1917
*This Virtual Class is designed for all skill levels.*
*Please note this is a 3 hour class! We are starting a little earlier but will be taking a short break*
A Masterpiece Lost and Found
Gustav Klimt’s Portrait of Fräulein Lieser (1917) is a dazzling late masterpiece, showing a young woman in a richly patterned shawl against a vivid red backdrop. Left unfinished when Klimt died, it then vanished without a trace. Its fate was a mystery for more than a century until it burst back into the spotlight with a sensational rediscovery in 2022. The sitter’s identity is still debated, but she belonged to the influential Viennese Lieser family. In April 2024, this long-lost treasure smashed records in Vienna, selling for €30 million and claiming its place as one of the most thrilling art finds of the century. We’re going to have a blast painting Portrait of Fräulein Lieser! We’ll practice the beautiful balance in Klimt’s work—slowing down to capture the detailed, controlled face, then letting loose and getting wild with the patterns, colours, and movement in the dress and background.
